Mozzwise Briefing

North Korea
Overall Risk: Low

North Korea has seasonal mosquito activity from May through October, with peak risk during the summer monsoon months of July and August. The southern and western lowland provinces, particularly rice-growing areas, carry the highest disease risk. Limited public health infrastructure complicates disease surveillance and control.

Malaria (P. vivax) is the primary concern, with transmission in southern provinces near the DMZ and in western coastal areas. Japanese encephalitis is present in rural agricultural zones. Limited health data makes accurate risk assessment difficult.

Anopheles species transmit vivax malaria in agricultural and rural areas. Culex tritaeniorhynchus carries Japanese encephalitis near rice paddies. Inadequate vector control resources mean mosquito populations are largely unchecked.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
Eliminate standing water near your accommodation
Keep windows and doors closed or screened
Consider antimalarial prophylaxis if malaria is present — consult your doctor
