Mozzwise Briefing

Zambia
Overall Risk: Low

Zambia has year-round mosquito activity in the lowlands, with peak risk during the rainy season from November through April. The Luapula, Northern, and Northwestern provinces carry the highest malaria burden. The Zambezi River valley and the Bangweulu wetlands are also high-risk areas. Lusaka has lower but present urban transmission.

Malaria (P. falciparum and P. vivax) is the primary concern throughout the country. Lymphatic filariasis is present in some areas. The extensive wetlands and river systems provide abundant breeding habitat during the wet season.

Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus are the dominant malaria vectors. The countrys well-watered geography creates extensive breeding habitat. Antimalarial prophylaxis and bed nets are strongly recommended for all travelers.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
Eliminate standing water near your accommodation
Keep windows and doors closed or screened
Consider antimalarial prophylaxis if malaria is present — consult your doctor
