Mozzwise Briefing

Liberia
Overall Risk: Low

Liberia has year-round mosquito activity in its equatorial climate, with peak risk during the rainy season from May through October. The entire country carries high malaria burden, with the coastal lowlands, Monrovia, and rural areas all significantly affected.

Malaria (P. falciparum and P. vivax) is the primary concern and among the leading causes of death. Yellow fever is endemic. Limited health infrastructure and post-conflict recovery challenges complicate disease control.

Anopheles gambiae is the dominant malaria vector. Aedes aegypti transmits yellow fever. The hot, humid equatorial climate and abundant rainfall maintain high mosquito density year-round.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
Eliminate standing water near your accommodation
Keep windows and doors closed or screened
Consider antimalarial prophylaxis if malaria is present — consult your doctor
