Mauritania
Overall Risk: Low

Mauritania has highly seasonal mosquito activity, concentrated during the short rainy season from July through October in the south. The Senegal River valley along the southern border carries the highest risk. The vast Saharan interior has minimal mosquito activity. Nouakchott has periodic urban outbreaks.

Dengue fever has been reported at moderate levels, particularly in Nouakchott. Yellow fever is present in the southern regions. Malaria risk is concentrated along the Senegal River border. The dry Saharan climate naturally limits year-round mosquito exposure for most of the country.

Aedes aegypti transmits dengue in urban areas. Anopheles species carry malaria along the southern river systems. The extreme aridity of most of the country restricts mosquitoes to river valleys, oases, and urban water sources.
