Cambodia has year-round mosquito activity, with the highest risk during the rainy season from May through October. The provinces bordering Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, along with forested and rural areas, carry the greatest disease burden. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have significant dengue risk.
Dengue fever is the primary concern, with annual outbreaks during the wet season. Malaria (P. falciparum and P. vivax) remains present in forested border regions but has declined significantly in recent years. Chikungunya, Zika, and Japanese encephalitis are also reported.
Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main day-biting dengue vectors. Anopheles dirus and Anopheles minimus transmit malaria in forested areas, primarily biting in the evening and at night.
