Ecuador has year-round mosquito activity in coastal and Amazon lowlands, with peak risk during the wet season from January through May. The Guayaquil coast, the Esmeraldas province, and the Oriente (Amazon region) carry the highest risk. Quito and the highland Sierra above 2,200 meters have minimal risk.
Dengue fever is the primary concern, with Guayaquil being the epicenter of outbreaks. Malaria (P. falciparum and P. vivax) persists in the Amazon and northern coastal regions. Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever are also present.
Aedes aegypti is the dominant urban vector in coastal and lowland cities. Anopheles species carry malaria in the Amazon and northwestern provinces. The Galapagos Islands have limited mosquito-borne disease risk.
