Mozzwise Briefing

Micronesia
Overall Risk: Low

The Federated States of Micronesia have year-round mosquito activity, with peak risk during the wetter months. The four main island states (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae) each carry similar risk levels, with Pohnpei having the highest rainfall and mosquito density.

Dengue fever is the primary concern, with moderate activity and periodic outbreaks. Micronesia was among the first Pacific nations to report Zika circulation. The scattered island geography means outbreaks can affect islands independently.

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector. The high rainfall across the islands, particularly on Pohnpei, supports abundant mosquito breeding year-round.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
