Vanuatu
Overall Risk: Low

Vanuatu has year-round mosquito activity across its tropical island chain, with peak risk during the wet season from November through April. The larger islands of Efate, Espiritu Santo, and Malakula carry the highest exposure. Coastal areas and areas near standing water are primary breeding sites.

Dengue fever is the primary concern, with moderate activity and periodic outbreaks. Vanuatu has historically had malaria transmission, but cases have declined significantly with control efforts. The scattered island geography creates varied risk between islands.

Aedes aegypti transmits dengue in populated areas. Anopheles farauti is the primary malaria vector on some islands. The tropical climate and heavy rainfall maintain mosquito breeding habitat year-round.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
Eliminate standing water near your accommodation
Keep windows and doors closed or screened
Consider antimalarial prophylaxis if malaria is present — consult your doctor
