Mozzwise Briefing

Palau
Overall Risk: Low

Palau has year-round mosquito activity in its tropical Pacific climate, with peak risk during the wetter months from May through November. The main island of Babeldaob and the Koror area carry the highest exposure.

Dengue fever has been reported at low levels. The small population and island setting limit outbreak scale, but the tropical climate supports year-round mosquito breeding. Palau has no malaria transmission.

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector, breeding in domestic water containers and natural tree holes. The islands reliance on rainwater collection can create breeding habitat near homes.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
Eliminate standing water near your accommodation
Keep windows and doors closed or screened
Consider antimalarial prophylaxis if malaria is present — consult your doctor
