Belize
Overall Risk: Low

Belize has peak mosquito activity during the rainy season from June through November. The low-lying coastal areas, the Cayo and Toledo districts, and areas near standing water carry the highest risk. The cayes and offshore islands generally have lower mosquito density due to sea breezes.

Dengue fever is the primary concern, with moderate outbreaks during the wet season. Malaria (P. vivax) persists at low levels in rural southern districts. Belize has made significant progress in malaria reduction.

Aedes aegypti is the main dengue vector in towns and populated areas. Anopheles species carry malaria in rural forested areas. Travelers to the mainland interior face higher exposure than those staying on coastal cayes.

Precautions

Use DEET (20%+) or Picaridin-based repellent on exposed skin
Wear light-colored, long-sleeve clothing at dawn and dusk
Sleep under a permethrin-treated mosquito net if no air conditioning
Eliminate standing water near your accommodation
Keep windows and doors closed or screened
Consider antimalarial prophylaxis if malaria is present — consult your doctor
