Mozzwise Briefing

Austria
Overall Risk: Low

Austria has seasonal mosquito activity from May through September, with peak populations during the summer months. The Danube Valley, the Neusiedler See area, and lowland agricultural areas in the east have the highest mosquito density. The Alpine regions have minimal activity.

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease concern, with occasional circulation detected in eastern Austria. Overall mosquito-borne disease risk is very low. The Alpine climate of much of the country naturally limits mosquito populations.

Culex pipiens is the dominant species. The Danube corridor and eastern lowlands support the highest summer populations, while the mountainous west is largely mosquito-free.
