Mozzwise Briefing

Bulgaria
Overall Risk: Low

Bulgaria has seasonal mosquito activity from May through October, with peak populations during the summer months. The Thracian Plain, the Danube lowlands, and the Black Sea coast have the highest mosquito density. The mountainous interior has shorter seasons and lower density.

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease concern, with periodic cases reported in the lowlands. Overall risk is low. The continental climate and mountainous terrain limit mosquito activity in much of the country.

Culex pipiens is the dominant species. The lowland river valleys and agricultural areas support the highest summer populations.
