Germany
Overall Risk: Low

Germany has seasonal mosquito activity from May through September, with peak populations during the summer months of June through August. The Rhine Valley, the Upper Rhine Plain, and lowland areas in northern Germany have the highest mosquito density. Urban areas experience moderate nuisance biting near water features.

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease concern, with Germany detecting its first locally-acquired cases in 2019 in eastern regions. Risk remains low but is being monitored as the virus establishes in central Europe. Aedes albopictus has been detected at border crossings.

Culex pipiens is the dominant species. The temperate continental climate limits the mosquito season. The Rhine floodplains are historically known for large mosquito populations, managed by long-standing biological control programs.
