Romania
Overall Risk: Low

Romania has seasonal mosquito activity from May through October, with peak populations during the warm summer months. The Danube Delta, the Black Sea coast, and lowland agricultural areas have the highest mosquito density. The Danube Delta in particular supports very large mosquito populations due to its extensive wetlands.

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease concern, with Romania being one of the more frequently affected European countries. The Danube Delta and southern regions have reported regular seasonal cases. Overall risk remains low but is notable for southern and eastern Romania.

Culex pipiens is the dominant West Nile virus vector. The Danube Delta is a major breeding ground and bird migration corridor, both of which support West Nile virus circulation. Nuisance mosquito levels can be very high in the delta region.
