Mozzwise Briefing

Hungary
Overall Risk: Low

Hungary has seasonal mosquito activity from May through October, with peak populations during the warm summer months. The Danube and Tisza river floodplains, Lake Balaton, and the Great Hungarian Plain have the highest mosquito density. Budapest and urban areas along the rivers experience significant summer nuisance biting.

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease concern, with Hungary reporting cases in most recent years. The extensive river systems and floodplains create favorable conditions for Culex breeding and West Nile virus circulation. Overall disease risk remains low.

Culex pipiens is the dominant species and the main West Nile virus vector. The Tisza River floodplains and Hortobagy wetlands support particularly large mosquito populations in summer.
